Bespoke commissions are undertaken for collectors seeking a work with historical depth, not merely a decorative (floral) painting. The completed painting is accompanied by documentation of source material, pigments, process, and framing.

What to expect

Each bespoke commission is developed over a period depending on complexity. Materials, scale and process are determined in informal conversations and guided by the requirements of the work itself. Frequent updates are sent throughout the painting process to prevent surprises.

Bespoke framing in collaboration with craftsmen is organised if required; options including replicas are provided for discussion.

Dutch paintings tulip paintings by Tanja Moderscheim

A commissioned painting (2025) for a home in the US.

Double baluster Delft Blue vase (1685) with Dutch heritage tulips (1620-1903) and insects. Traditional oils on fine linen, 90 x 85cm framed.

This painting features Dutch heritage tulip cultivars dating to 1620-1903 as well as a few wildtype tulips from the East. The most important tulip is the Zomerschoon (1620), a ‘truly broken’ or feathered tulip which will have been traded during the Tulipmania years of the 1630s. This tulip developed tolerance to a mosaic virus to which other broken tulips of the 17^th century succumbed; the Zomerschoon is therefore an important survivor. The tulip bulbs were sourced from conservators in Holland and grown in the artist’s garden prior to painting. The double baluster vase is an existing Delft Blue piece dating to c. 1685 and the insects were painted from the artist’s entomological collection or found in the garden. The frame is bespoke and modeled on 17^th century Dutch frames.

Van der Ast Zomerschoon 1625 replica by Tanja Moderscheim

A commissioned painting (2025) for a home in the US: a replica of Balthasar van de Ast’s masterpiece “Vase with a single Tulip” (1625) held in The Mauritshuis, The Hague.

Traditional oils on copper: painted using the pigments and technique Van der Ast likely used in 1625.

This painting is thought to feature the Zomerschoon tulip (1620). In addition to this tulip being in the artist’s collection of Dutch heritage tulips, the artist studied the painting in the Mauritshuis and was able to provide details for frame reproduction:

The frame is a bespoke replica of the frame on the original painting in The Mauritshuis, made by craftsmen using a replica of a 17^th century Dutch ripple machine.
